Annual Juried Show Will Feature Gulf Coast Artists At The George Dunbar Gallery In Olde Towne

The City of Slidell is preparing to open its annual Mixed Media juried exhibition on Friday, May 8, at the George Dunbar Gallery inside the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall.

According to the city’s Department of Cultural & Public Affairs, the exhibit will begin with a public reception and awards presentation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 8 at 2055 Second St. in Olde Towne Slidell. The exhibition is scheduled to remain on display through June 26.

City officials say the show is open to artists age 18 and older from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Each artist may submit up to three works, with a $25 flat entry fee.

The city describes Mixed Media as an annual juried competition known for showcasing a wide range of artistic styles and materials. This year’s juror is Nina L. Dunbar, a Slidell native and arts administrator who currently serves as deputy general director of Opera Santa Barbara, according to the city’s call for artists and official prospectus.

The prospectus states that eligible entries must combine at least two media, be original, and have been completed within the past two years. Digital work may be used, but the city says work using only one medium will not be accepted as mixed media.

A total of $600 in awards is planned, including $300 for Best of Show, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Honorable mentions may also be awarded at the juror’s discretion, according to the prospectus.

The city said accepted works are to be delivered to the gallery on May 4 or May 5. Regular viewing hours for the exhibition are set for Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment, with same-day appointments available through the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs.

Why This Matters In Slidell

The exhibit adds to Slidell’s spring and early summer arts calendar in Olde Towne, drawing visitors to City Hall and nearby downtown businesses while giving local and regional artists a public venue in the city’s cultural district. For residents, it is another example of the city using municipal space for arts programming rather than limiting City Hall to government business alone.
